Austin gives you more options for an engagement session than most couples realize. Hill Country views, downtown murals, quiet garden corners, a whole city’s worth of backdrops depending on what feels like you. Here’s a list of our favorite spots around town, along with a few things we’ve learned from photographing at each one.

ARCHITECTURE | Best Austin Engagement Session Locations

1. Laguna Gloria (Reservation required) – Gardens, lake views, and architecture that adds real polish to engagement photos. Courtyards, sculptures, and a quiet, romantic feel give you a lot of different settings within one place. There’s also an indoor room with a bright blue couch, a nice backup if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

2. Texas State Capitol – The Capitol’s architecture and detail make for striking photos on their own. The manicured lawns and old trees around the building add some romance too.

3. Central Library – Austin Public Library – The grounds mix modern architecture with a lot of greenery. It’s in the Seaholm District, so you get everything from city energy to quiet corners, plus a great view of the Butterfly Bridge.

Advice: Be mindful of joggers and bicyclists.

4. Seaholm Power Plant – That industrial meets modern look makes for a different kind of backdrop than most of Austin. It’s right in the middle of downtown, so you get some urban energy in the photos too.

Advice: There are usually people hanging out with their pets on the lawn.

5. Sekrit Theater (Reservation Required) – A few acres of outdoor space filled with handmade and antique structures, so no two corners look the same. There’s also a vintage truck on the property that adds a little nostalgia to the photos.

Advice: Bring bug spray

6. University of Texas – UT has the Tower and the famous blue door, which turned green in 2023. The lawn in front of McCombs School of Business gives you a mix of architecture and greenery. If you’re an alum, shooting on campus adds something personal to your story, and the light here at sunset is hard to beat.

Advice: Be mindful of busy college students and the time of year. You may find a line forming around the favorite locations around graduation time for Senior portraits.

7. Commodore Perry Estate (Reservation Required) – Originally built as a country home, it still has that European estate feel. The architecture and gardens give you a lot to work with.
Advice: Enjoy a cocktail at
Lutie’s before your session.

8. Heman-Marion Sweatt Courthouse – Real historic character, with stately lanterns and criss-crossed window panes. The trees around it frame each shot nicely too.

MURALS | Best Austin Engagement Session Locations

9. Big Chiller Blues The wall’s color and texture add a fun, bright element that helps your photos stand out.

10. Tau Ceti – Austin’s tallest mural, and the colors add a lot of energy to photos. It’s downtown, so you get some city grit in the background too.

11. I Love You So Much – Simple, but it works. A good backdrop with a message that speaks for itself. It’s on South Congress, so you get some city energy whether you shoot at sunrise or under the lights at night.

12. Love from Austin – A local favorite. Its black and white design is simple, which lets you and your partner be the focus of the photo.

13. Greetings from Austin – A classic Austin photo op, with its bright, retro postcard design. It’s right in the middle of the city and feels especially fitting if you’re planning a destination wedding here or most of your guests are traveling in.

Downtown / Skyline and City | Best Austin Engagement Session Locations

14. Austin Convention Center Parking Garage – A panoramic view of the skyline, especially good at sunrise or after dark when the city lights come on. It’s easy to get to, and if you’ve got a cool car, this is the spot to include it. Popular for a reason, it’s a good blend of edgy and romantic.

15. Long Center – Sits on a hill across Lady Bird Lake, so you get skyline views along with some interesting architecture.

16. Zilker Park – City views, the lake, and a lot of green space. Also a great option if you want your dog in the photos.

17. South Congress Avenue (SoCo)A mix of landmarks and personality packed into a few blocks. Here are some of my favorite stops along the way.

Home Slice Pizza – Quirky, vintage, and the pizza is genuinely good.
South Congress Hotel – Modern architecture with a South Congress staple, the black and white tile wall.
Hotel San Jose – Lush greenery growing up the walls, a vintage white window, and a desert landscape out front.
Austin Motel – A local icon since 1938. The “So Close Yet So Far Out” sign resonates with a lot of couples, and at night the neon lights add a nice glow.
Jo’s Coffee – Home of the “I love you so much” mural, and a good spot for casual, candid fall and winter photos with coffee in hand.
Simona’s Coffee / Colton House Hotel (Reservation Required) – A boutique hotel with a lot of character and stylish decor.

Near Water | Best Austin Engagement Session Locations

18. Mount BonnellSome of the best views over Lake Austin. It’s 775 feet above sea level, so you get a real sense of scale in the photos. It’s known for sunsets, though the misty morning shown above proves it works well early too.

Advice: Opt for a weekday to avoid the crowds.

19. Bull Creek District Park + Greenbelt – Good water and greenery, plus really nice light during golden hour.

20. North Side of Town Lake near the Four Seasons – Blends the skyline with the water, especially nice at sunset when the light turns gold over the lake. A good pick if you want both city and nature in the same set of photos.

21. Commons Ford Ranch Metropolitan Park – One of our favorite spots for couples who want something a little more open and a little more Texas. There’s a dock right on Lake Austin if you want water in the frame, and open meadows nearby that fill with sunflowers depending on the season. It’s dog-friendly too, so bring yours along if you want them in a few shots.

Advice: It’s a bit more remote and parking is limited, so plan to arrive early, especially on spring weekends.

22. Lady Bird Lake Boardwalk – The classic Austin skyline plus a shaded, natural path along the water.

23. McKinney Falls State Park (Reservations Recommended) – Rock formations, big trees, and waterfalls. Leaves turn in the fall, and there’s a great view over the lower falls. In spring you’ll find wildflower fields too. It’s also dog-friendly.

24. Austin’s 360/Pennybacker Bridge – Panoramic views of the skyline and the Colorado River. Works for a romantic sunset shoot or something more playful in daylight.

Advice: You’ll need comfortable shoes for the short but steep hike.

25. Mueller Lake Park – Good sunset color and calm lake views. There’s a trail around the lake, a single willow tree, and a shaded structure covered in vines. Also dog-friendly.

Gardens + Fields | Best Austin Engagement Session Locations

26. Circle C Park – In Southwest Austin, with a lot of foliage and good light. In spring the fields fill with bluebonnets.

Advice: Watch out for disc golf players.

27. Brushy Creek Lake Park – Just north of Austin, with nice natural light and trails along the water. Bluebonnets show up here in spring too.

28. Richard Moya Park – Mature pecan trees create a kind of natural cathedral, with light filtering through the leaves at sunset. The historic bridge over Onion Creek adds an older feel to the photos.

29. Mayfield Park – Gardens, peacocks wandering around, and a small vintage cottage, so there’s a lot of character packed into a small space. At sunset, the light through the trees adds something special.

30. Zilker Botanical Garden (Reservation Required) – Lush plant life, flowers, and a few small waterfalls. There’s enough variety in the landscapes to get a few different looks in one session.

31. Mattie’s Austin – Southern charm, greenery, and peacocks that wander the property too. The wraparound porch and filtered light give you a lot of options, whether you’re going for something relaxed or something more romantic.

32. Waterloo Greenway Park and Moody Amphitheater – Greenery, wildflowers, and Waller Creek running through it. There are also some minimalist walls if you’re after a more modern look.

33. Vineyards of Fredericksburg (Reservation Required) – Worth the short drive out of the city: rolling vines, rustic buildings, and Hill Country views. Bonus, you get to toast your engagement with some good local wine. A few of my favorites:

  • Augusta Vin
  • Baron’s Creek Vineyards
  • Signor Vineyards
  • Becker Vineyards

OTHER | Best Austin Engagement Session Locations

Your Home – There’s no place more special than where you spend most of your time together. If you want something personal and low-key, a home session might be the move. Kitchen table, living room, backyard, wherever the two of you actually hang out and live your life. It won’t feel styled, and that’s the point.

However, if you’re not thrilled with your own decor, Airbnb, Vrbo, and PeerSpace all have plenty of beautiful spaces to rent for a session.

Your Wedding Venue – There’s a reason you picked your wedding venue, whether it’s the architecture, the greenery, or something else entirely. Shooting your engagement session there can also help you figure out your favorite spots for the wedding day itself.

Your favorite place to hang out – Movie theater, favorite taco spot, wherever you two actually go. These sessions tend to feel the most like you, and they usually come with a good story.

Still Having Trouble Deciding?

If you’ve got access to somewhere unique, a family ranch, a private estate, a country club, even a resort, use it. It’ll make your photos genuinely your own. Ask around your network, you’d be surprised what people have access to, and it never hurts to ask even if it feels like a long shot. Airbnb, Peerspace, and Vrbo are also worth a look.
