Querube’s baby shower was on the back lawn of a home on Lake Austin, with white sofas out on the grass, a dusty blue bar facing the water, and a small goose on just about everything. Joy, our associate photographer, covered it and got there before the guests so she could photograph every detail untouched. If you’re planning a goose themed baby shower, here are the ideas worth borrowing.

1. Pick One Motif for a Goose Themed Baby Shower

The goose started on the invitation, a small illustrated one above Querube’s name, in a sage green envelope with a blue striped liner and vintage flower stamps. After that it showed up as a cutout beside the balloon backdrop, a ceramic figure with a green bow on the bar, cookies, cocktail napkins, drink tags and the top tier of the cake.

None of them are big. A lot of small geese add up to a goose themed baby shower without the theme taking over the party.

2. Keep the Goose Themed Baby Shower Palette Soft

Sage green, pale blue, cream and a lot of white. That is the whole list. It carried from the balloons to the linens to the favor boxes, which were pale green with ribbon ties and piled into wicker baskets.

The gingham on the cake and the stripes on the stationery kept all that softness from looking flat.

3. Trade Tables for Living Rooms

This Lake Austin baby shower was set up on the back lawn of a lakefront home, under big trees with string lights and the water a few steps away. Instead of rows of tables, Carolina built little living rooms on the grass. White sofas and armchairs circled low wood coffee tables, with rentals from Bright Event Rentals and a few round tables in pale blue off to the side for anyone who wanted a proper seat.

For a two hour party where people mostly stand, hug and snack, it makes sense. Nobody gets stuck at one table.

4. Dress the Small Tables Too

The cocktail tables are the detail I keep zooming in on. Reverie Social dressed them in sage green with a striped scalloped topper, and they look like tiny skirts.

Botanical No. 9 kept the flowers loose and low: white roses, blue delphinium and hydrangea in woven vases and little baskets, easy to talk over.

5. Give Your Goose Themed Baby Shower Table a Backdrop

Up by the house, the food table sat under three stone arches with a sage linen down to the ground. Latin Bakery Austin filled it with empanadas in a leather basket, mini meringue tarts under a glass dome, fruit tarts, caprese skewers, and a grazing board with salami roses, dried apricots, olives and strawberries. The cake stood at one end: white tiers, a goose on top and green gingham around the base.

You may not have stone arches. A doorway, a window or a wall of greenery does the same job.

Joy photographed this table from every angle before anyone touched it, which takes more willpower than you would think.

6. Keep the Drink Menu Short and Add Live Music

Too Shay Spirits set up a dusty blue bar at the edge of the lawn, facing the lake. The menu had three drinks: a Blueberry Spritz, a Blackberry Mule and a Guava Margarita, with bowls of dried citrus for garnish and a little goose tag on the glass. Yes, another goose. Three drinks is plenty, and the line keeps moving.

Under the covered patio, a musician from Texas Sun Music played keys and sang, her keyboard stand draped in lace. Live music at a shower sounds like a lot until you see how small the setup is. One person, one keyboard.

7. Have Your Photographer Arrive Before the Guests

Showers go fast. Two hours, sometimes less, and the setup that took weeks to plan is packed up by midafternoon. Carolina knew that, which is why Joy was there early. It was also a soft gray April afternoon, which any photographer will tell you is a gift at noon.

If you take one idea from this post, take this one. Give your photographer time with the space before anyone arrives.
