Justin reached out a few weeks before he wanted to propose to Kacey. You could tell right away how nervous he was, in a good way. He didn’t have a ton of specifics for the Horseshoe Bay Resort proposal he had in mind, just a general feeling of what he wanted. Somewhere with water, some greenery, nothing too done up. No signs, no big proposal setup with flowers spelling anything out. He just wanted it to feel like the two of them, out on a walk. Then this huge moment happening in the middle of it.

We ended up at Horseshoe Bay Resort, about an hour outside of Austin, for a Saturday in late March. Kacey thought she was there for a weekend with her friends. She had no idea what was actually waiting for her.

Planning a Proposal That Feels Like Them

Justin and I talked through the details over a call. Honestly, one thing stuck with me. He kept saying he didn’t want it to feel staged. I hear that a lot from the guys I work with, and it’s always my favorite thing to help figure out. It’s a place my friend Lauren had photographed before, so I already had an idea of how the light would fall there in the afternoon.

I got there early and just kind of blended into the resort, walking around like any other guest. Camera stayed tucked in my bag until it was time. The Moment She Realized

Kacey said yes with the lake behind her and Justin’s hands still shaking a little. That part alone would have made for a great gallery. But there was more to it.

Once the proposal itself was done, Justin and Kacey moved into the couple’s session that follows every proposal. It’s just the two of them walking the grounds while I photograph them getting used to being engaged. We were near the end of that session when Kacey’s friends showed up. They had driven in from Houston that morning and timed it so they’d arrive right as things were wrapping up. I was signaled that they were there for the couple so I kept myself positioned with them behind me as I kept shooting Justin and Kacey. When Kacey finally glanced past me and clocked her friends standing there, that’s when she lost it. Not from the proposal itself, but from realizing her people had come all that way without her knowing. You can’t really direct that kind of reaction. You just have to be paying attention when it happens.

They spent the rest of the day together. They walked the grounds and took pictures under the string lights by the pergola, just soaking it all in as a group.

Why Horseshoe Bay Resort Is a Great Spot for a Proposal

Horseshoe Bay sits right on Lake LBJ, so you’ve got water views everywhere you turn. The property also gives you palm trees, open lawns, and stone archways all scattered close together. It’s far enough from Austin that it feels like a real getaway. But it’s not so far that it becomes a whole ordeal to get everyone there. That way you can plan around it and stay out of anyone’s way. And dress for the actual weather, not the season on paper. Late March in Texas can already feel like summer.

What I loved about Justin and Kacey’s day was how little of it was actually planned out. A walk by the water, a familiar view, and a group of friends who drove three hours just to see her face when she found out.
